A Grilled Specialty for the RV Tastebuds

Who’s the grill master of your home on wheels? Chances are it's the Mister (come on ladies, we have to let them be the king of something!), but we’re willing to bet we’ve got something up our sleeve that he hasn’t grilled yet and we’re pretty sure that once you've tried it, it’s going to be added to the favorites list. While the idea of grilling fruit isn’t new, it isn’t all that common either. That's right, we said grilling fruit. For those of you who have already tried this wonderful treat, we don’t have to convince you just how delightful it is, but for those of you who have not yet given it a go, this recipe is a must! Grilled fruit is so delectable, it can take the place of other more sinful desserts. You can have a little extra and still not feel guilty! Have we convinced you yet? Shall we just get on with the recipe already?

Evanne Schmarder, host of RV Cooking Show is the genius to credit for this fabulous recipe, so be sure to stop by her website and thank her, and don’t forget to stop by our website too! Better yet, come on over and see us here at RV Country and by all means, feel free to bring us some of your leftovers!

Ingredients:
Honey-Balsamic Glaze
1/4 c honey*
2 T dark balsamic vinegar
1 T packed brown sugar
1 t real vanilla extract
1/8 c water
Fruit
2 freestone peaches - halved, pit removed
2 ripe, sweet plums - halved, pits removed
10 strawberries - washed and skewered (2 skewers - 5 on each)
4 or 5 figs - ends cut off and halved
Goat cheese (for figs)
Foil or grilling tray for figs - sprayed with canola oil spray to prevent sticking

How to:
Preheat grill on high.
Combine all Honey-Balsamic Glaze ingredients in a small bowl and mix together well.
Using a basting brush, coat all fruit with the glaze.
Reduce grill heat to medium and place fruit, flesh side down, on grill. Baste the top of the fruit with glaze.
Grill for 3-4 minutes (strawberries are delicate - check them in 1-2 minutes) and turn. Baste the fruit once again. Grill for another 3 or so minutes until a paring knife goes through fruit with ease. Remove from grill. Check the strawberries visually and when they look soft and grill-marked they are done - 1 or 2 more minutes after turning - remove from grill and set aside.
Figs
Place fig halves on foil (that has been sprayed with canola oil spray), baste with glaze, and top with a small spoonful of goat cheese. Transfer foil to grill and grill until the figs look caramelized and the goat cheese has browned on the tips a bit - 3-5 minutes. Remove and be prepared to rave!
Serve this luscious grilled fruit warm or at room-temperature over whipped cream, vanilla yogurt, or by itself as a delicious breakfast treat or meal side-dish.

Additional Tips:
Spray your honey measuring cup with canola oil spray and the honey will slip out of the cup and into the bowl.
Choose fruit that is about one day away from being perfectly ripe. Too soft and it'll mush on the grill grate. Too hard and it's just not sweet enough.
Try grilling any type of fruit you enjoy.
When grilling meat for a Mexican dish I always throw a couple of halved limes flesh side down on the grill for a few minutes. They get sweet, smoky, juicy and delish!

Monaco RV Pre-Rally dinner in Manitowoc Wisconsin A BLAST!

August 1, 2011

Tomorrow (2 pm) is opening day for the Monaco Pre-Rally in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and things are off to a great start.

A few of us even found some time to do some sightseeing at Lambeau Field!

Green Bay, Wisconsin is mere 35 miles from Manitowoc and offers one heck of a stadium tour!

You may be following our Guest Bloggers Thomas & Deborah as they prepped, packed, and journeyed towards Wisconsin... Well, we had a little prepping and packing to do ourselves!

Over the years we have hosted many pre-rally dinners for our loyal Monaco customers friends. From luau's in Lancaster to Georgia peaches, we've had lots of fun with you all! Usually, we have a little help in the catering department, but this year we decided to do the cooking ourselves! Our tie dye loving crew is no stranger to the BBQ, so we packed up our grills, tongs, and aprons and headed the 1,100 miles to Wisconsin.

On the menu was something us Californians are pretty proud of - Tri Tip! The popular beef cut originated on the Central Coast of California in the 1950's, and has since become a national envy and an undeniable California tradition. Of course, we also had rolls, salad, beans, and barbequed chicken.

Did we mention we did all the food preparations IN A MOTORHOME kitchen!?

Over 100 people ate, drank, and won prizes! It was perfect and we wouldn't change a thing - well, except that we're sad it's over! We hope to see you around in the Monaco display and look forward to meeting up with even more of you at the FMCA rally in Madison, Wisconsin next week!

Thomas & Deborah - Departure Day

Wednesday July 27

Yesterday we wrote about planning a road trip, and we’re about to see how we’ve done. These excursions Deborah and I take for Paul Evert’s RV Country are logistically challenging because we must plan three trips before we leave home.

We begin with a nice long road trip in a luxurious roomy Monaco; this year it’s a 44’ Executive, one of the best. We’ll spend 4-5 days working our way across country listening to books on CD, sightseeing, and watching the landscape go by in opulent comfort. The leather, ceramic tile, Corian countertops, and fine woodwork are of a quality that exceeds our home (remember, I teach school for a living). It’s a relaxing, pampered life with many easy miles covered each day.

Once we get to the Monaco Pre-rally, however, all that comfort comes to an end. Within minutes of arriving, we move out completely. The pre-owned coach we drive will serve as the sales office at the rallies, and the sales staff is all too eager to move in. Most of our belongings go in a large box stowed in the show trailer. We go from royalty to minimalists and begin life on our Honda Valkyrie with very little luggage space. Deborah is very proud of the fact that she fits clothing for 12 days in a saddlebag half the size of a piece of carry-on luggage. The GPS, tourbooks, toiletries, tools, and rain gear all need to be carefully tucked away into very small spaces along with our clothes. We’ll cover far fewer miles in a day and avoid the interstate if at all possible.

At the end of the FMCA rally we’ll return to Madison, load the bike into the show trailer, and begin the third leg of our endeavor: another road trip back home. This year will be a marathon sprint because of the late date; I have to be back for the start of school.

We’ll keep you posted on how we manage… these blogs are about to get MUCH shorter.

May RV Show features Winnebago

Started in 1958 by businessman John K. Hanson and five others to improve quality, Winnebago Industries manufactured furniture and other components designed specifically for its travel trailers. Then, in 1966 the first motor home rolled off the Winnebago Industries assembly lines. Through use of the assembly line and other manufacturing innovations in the motor home industry, Winnebago Industries could produce a motor home that sold for half the price of its competitors’ models.
The Itasca line was introduced in 1975. 1986 marked the appearance of Winnebago Industries on the "Fortune 500" list of corporations. In 2008, as the company celebrated its 50th anniversary, The ERA Class B motor home was also introduced, providing Winnebago Industries with a third motor home brand.
From the beginning, Winnebago Industries has been the motor home leader in technological and design advances - and they continue to lead today.
Examples include three-point seat belts for the driver and co-pilot on all models, Thermo-Panel® sidewalls, appliance tie-downs, and an all-metal welded subfloor framework on all units with no wood compartments or floor supports.
Many employees have been working at Winnebago Industries for more than 30 years. The average is approximately 16 years! Some of their workers are following in the footsteps of parents and grandparents.
Owners of a Winnebago are invited to join the Winnebago-Itasca Travelers Club which offers a great deal of benefits.

To visit their facilities you’ll want to stop by their website for detailed information such as directions and hours of operation.

May RV Show features Coachmen RV

Coachmen RV products have been on US roads and highways since 1964.  Founded by three brothers: Tom, Keith and Claude Corson. They started out small, with their first year of production being 12 travel trailers, a single truck camper and 80 truck caps. Since that time, over 600,000 Coachmen recreational vehicles have been produced.

Coachmen joined the ranks of the prestigious "Fortune 500" in 1984 and in December of 2008, Coachmen RV became a proud brand of Forest River Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway Company headquartered in Middlebury, and manufacturing Class A Motorhomes, Class C Motorhomes, Fifth Wheels and Travel Trailers. New Coachmen owners receive  a one year free membership to the Coachmen Owners Association.

Membership includes campground directory, tours and trips you can take with other members, tips and tricks on making RVing easier for newcomers, and even a catalog to purchase Coachmen apparel.

From the many types of RV’s, to the different benefits of owning a Coachmen, you can see why Coachmen is a top choice for the RV Lifestyle.

Our little spot in the desert...

Part of the Paul Evert's RV Country family is escaping the winter weather at our show in Parker, AZ at the Bluewater Casino. Our managers and sales people live in fifth wheels for the duration of the show.

Life looks pretty good to us! They have a BBQ, weight set, quads, etc. The weather is sunny and blue skies are hard to beat!

Here are the sales guys putting up balloons, which they do every day! It’s really an art. These guys get an assembly line going of who does the string, the helium, the tying, etc…

Tony Russo, our sales manager, is holding the camera, and our sales people Jorge D’Abramo (Green sweater) and Jerry Wight (Red sweater) are kicking back watching the game. Gotta be honest, we're a little jealous. Looks like fun!
