Out of the ordinary RV adventures - Charlenne & Jesse Newton

Please meet Jesse and Charlenne Newton! They’ve been married for 50 years and have enjoyed the RV lifestyle for nearly half of that time!

They were first bit by the RV bug in the early 80’s. In 1982, Jesse and Charlenne sold their farm store and went into the construction business. This meant living in a fifth wheel and traveling to a new job site every 6-8 weeks. They started out in a Pioneer Superliner and couldn’t wait for the weekends to explore each new town. “That’s when we knew the RV lifestyle was in our blood,” Charlenne says.

In 2000, the Newton’s purchased their first motorhome from Paul Evert's RV Country in Laughlin, NV. They settled on a brand new Monaco Diplomat 36’ with one slideout and continued full time RVing. Paul Evert’s in Laughlin did not currently have a service department, so they headed to their other location in Fresno, California for some repairs.

As Charlenne pointed out, “It makes no difference what brand or type of RV you have because owning an RV is just like owning a home; there is maintenance and repairs involved not matter what, but when you have great service like we’ve found here at Paul Evert’s RV, it makes it all worth while!” Even though their home base is in Kingman, Arizona, Jesse says, “It’s well worth the drive to Fresno for great service!” His praises for Paul Evert’s RV extended to the service writers Jason Hunt and Chris Arreola, and the service manager Hank Dudley to whom he referred to as “fantastic people who always get the job done!” Wherever Jesse and Charlenne’s travels take them, they try to arrange a trip through Fresno once a year.

They still laugh about the time they stopped for some minor repairs in 2002. While Jesse was discussing things with his service writer, Charlenne was out on the lot exploring. However, when a salesperson came and said to stop work on his coach, Jesse protested and demanded to know “Why!?” That’s when he was told, “Because your wife just traded it in on a newer one!”

It seems the blessings of the RV lifestyle just keep presenting themselves. When asked what their favorite trip was, both were hard pressed for an answer! After some reminiscing about a motorhome trip from Jasper to Cheyenne to Calgary to Alaska, (Some which even involved loading their Diplomat up onto ferry!) they finally settled on the time where their only plan was to have no plan!

“The Plan” was to make friends with new people in the RV Park and then go wherever their new friends suggested! They traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway and up the Ohio River. They were privileged to visit the gravesite of the soldier who participated in the Iwo Jima flag raising, they saw the terra cotta army of Chinese soldiers at the Kentucky Horse Park, and even the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base museum in Ohio. They marveled at the Mackinaw Bridge at night in Michigan and rode bikes on the Mackinac Island! They watched team practice at Lambeau field in Green Bay, Wisconsin and stared in fascination as ships went through the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
While these might not be the most popular travel destinations, the Newton’s are beyond grateful for their campground friend’s recommendations, and can’t imagine having missed even one sight or sound for the sake of “keeping on schedule.”

Unfortunately, during an afternoon bike ride in Thermopolis, Wyoming, Jesse and his pet dog had a disagreement about which direction to go, and Jesse fell, breaking his collarbone. As another testament to the RV lifestyle, the couple figured, “What better place to stay and recoup?” They stayed a month at the Hot Springs before continuing on with their journey.

For the Newton’s, that year is not one they will soon forget, and they proudly mentioned still keeping touch with most of the people they met in the campgrounds that year. It’s all the little details that make life in their motorhome such an adventure, and they plan on going with the flow for many years to come!

Life in an RV - By Curt Curtis

I have to say that staying in an RV is fun and rewarding and SO MUCH better than any hotel - even if it is for work!

I recently went to Quartzsite, Arizona to participate in an RV show. We display our vehicles for sale for customers to purchase. Our company has been doing this every January since 2000 and we have had good success. The last couple of years, I decided to forgo the hotel in Blythe, Ca and stay in a fifth wheel in Quartzsite, AZ.

This year was a little different as I stayed way out in the desert away from town. Let me first tell you that when you are moving in to a fifth wheel for the first time (Remember, I usually "Hotel It") there is a lot of preparing to do! I packed everything I thought I needed from home into my car and did some shopping to help stock up on incidentals and "manly" food. You see, I knew I was going to be bach'n it for three weeks and making all of my own meals! This in itself was exciting because, guess what, I got to eat whatever I wanted! You may think I'm kidding, but for me that was half the fun of it. I bought Captain Crunch, potato chips, dip, Cheez-its, cookie wafers, cornbeef hash, chili - you get the idea. Upon arriving in Quartzsite, I stopped by the show and then went to buy more food (steak, hot dogs, sausage, pasta, fruit, tortillas) to go in the refrigerator.

I suppose I should mention that I am the Vice President at Paul Evert's RV Country, so for all intents and purposes this puts me in charge of the show. You would think my fifth wheel would be perfectly ready then, right?! Well, sorta.

I finally arrived at my new home away from home in the evening. After a 7 hour drive, I was mistaken to think I could show up (in the dark) and just move in, eat, and go to bed. NOT! The refrigerator was not on and I had just purchased perishable foods at the grocery store! No worries, I have turned on an RV refrigerator before. Well, that lasted all of about one minute before the buzzer went off, telling me it had turned back off! I made a phone call and an employee came to my rescue and changed the battery for me. All seemed good, I ate, got ready for bed, and sat down to watch some TV. (I purchased a satellite/receiver and used my father-in-laws account to get channels for the month.) No TV...

Oh well, it was late anyways and I decided to wait until the morning to deal with it. Off to bed I go, UNTIL 3am, when my refrigerator buzzer goes off again! UGH! I tried to reset it, but to no avail. I waited until 5am to bug anyone. (My employees love me, I hope!) They said the battery was dead again and that I also had a converter problem. Welcome to the world of RVing. We hooked up jumper cables from the battery to a truck so I could get hot water for my morning shower and then off to work I went.

I have to tell you, once I got settled in it was truly a wonderful relaxing experience. I had some great evenings of cooking and socializing with other people in the park. I also went running a number of times and found it so peaceful to be in the desert. I got to look at stars you would never see in town and it made me appreciate all that God has created. The mountains, the coyotes, the moon, and the serenity of being by yourself. I can see how people can RV for extended periods of time and really look forward to doing that myself. I would be amiss to tell you that I never had any other RV issues, but you know what, that's part of the experience and it all works out in the end.

I also must mention that, one evening, I made this incredible dinner that would rival anyone's! I started with some cut up spicy sausage that I sauteed in garlic. I added in and simmered a can of stewed tomatoes, salsa, and cream. I also boiled water and cooked up some pasta. There is an exact time when pasta goes from a little chewy to perfect, and the stars must have been aligned because that part came out amazingly tender. I also had the broiler going with some garlic bread. (Extra butter, of course!) I grated some fresh parmesan and put it in the sauce and poured it over my pasta. The only thing missing was wine, but juice would have to do. It was amazingly delicious and I still think about it! I don't brag about my meal too much now that I am back home because I like to have a home cooked meal waiting for me at the end of the day. Ha! That meal was SO GOOD though that I had leftovers (I hardly ever eat leftovers) two days later.

Live the dream, buy an RV, and travel this wonderful nation because the memories you create cannot be replaced. No amount of money and fancy trips will ever top what you can experience on the road. I got a taste and I loved it and I highly recommend this wonderful lifestyle!

So we got to thinking, how can we really truly share the joys of RVing with others? What better way than with a blog? Sure we’ll post service tips, blips about new products, and the occasional promotion, but what we really want to do is capture the true essence of RVing. We hope to post many of our own adventures, stories, and even mishaps because we love everything about RVing too! Plus, it is our hope that you will email us your own experiences so that we can share the true joys of RV ownership with others.

My life on the road - From the beginning!

There have been plenty of good times in my life and as I sit here and reflect, there was always an RV involved somehow.

Even in the EARLY 80's we cruised around this country in swanky orange and brown fashion circa 1979 - in a 1979 Titan motorhome that is!

We fell in love with its dark brown booth dinette that folded into a bed (Which cushions - to my moms chagrin - we used to steal, put vinyl side down, and sled down the stairs with at our first home) and it's cumbersome roman shades and strange dutch-doored bathroom.

I can recall with surprising detail a rich history of friends, family, tradition, bonding, and overall happiness - all thanks to life on the road.

In the early 90's, my parents upgraded to a 1989 Winnebago Elandan 38' MHA. We left the rich browns and oranges of the 70's and soothed ourselves in the blues and pinks of the 80's. We caravaned with our friends, we boated on the Colorado river, we rode roller coasters at Six Flags, we rode our bikes through Lake Almanor until we couldn't even feel our legs anymore, and it was awesome. (Actually, note the picture below where I broke my leg on above said bike, but we were so dedicated to vacation we stayed...)

Life was an adventure all thanks to our motorhome!

There was no such thing as a slide-out in those days, which leaves me baffled as to how 2 parents, 3 teenagers (me, my brother, and sister) and 1 infant (15 years our junior, little brother) made it across this expansive country in essentially a giant hallway without killing each other! Actually, you know how we did it? My dad would gear up for the drive and our littlest brother would snack and nap, and we would do what you do in an RV- ANYTHING YOU WANTED TO!

We pretended we were surfing...
We played cards at the booth dinette...
We watched movies on the back bed (Yes, all 4 of us at once!)...
We listened to our CD players (This was before iPods!)...
We clamored at the window to take pictures of the buffalo blocking the road in Yellowstone...
We sang, we tried to get truckers to honk as they passed us, we ate more candy than should be legal, we microwaved and ate hundreds of chicken chimichangas from Costco... and we really truly LIVED...!

We stopped at strange things we saw along the road...
We read books and journaled our stops and compared the different pins and patches and stickers we had purchased...
We tasted crisp clean air as we took pictures of Lake Louise in Banff...
We giggled uncontrollably as we exchanged our allowances for Canadian money...
We ate the best ice cream EVER at an RV park in Montana...
We shopped until we literally dropped at the 4 story mall in Vancouver...
We plotted and planned our attack on Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon and Zion...

And I can't imagine my life if any one of those memories were missing.

Since then, my parents have upgraded to a 1999 Newmar Dutchstar with 1 slide! I'm 30 years old and you know what I enjoy? RVing... My older brother and sister have married and moved away, but that doesn't deter me one bit. Just recently, I called my mom and dad and little brother (Who is now taller than me!) and said "I want to go on an RV trip!" They eagerly obliged and just 2 months ago we set off over Thanksgiving vacation for Las Vegas! This time we brought the dogs and the adventure started again!

I read books, we watched movies, we had in motion satellite and internet, I worked on my laptop, and I realized that life is just SO SO good.

It's no mere coincidence I found my true calling in the RV industry. Thirteen years and three days later and I still get fulfillment and excitement from these homes away from home. If I could only explain to you, dear reader, that no matter what the cost or the maintenance or storage or the EXCUSES we tell ourselves - how WORTH IT RV ownership is, my life would be complete.

My past has always involved an RV and you can bet your bottom dollar my future plans involve one too! See you out there... on the road again...!
