RV Country Searches For... Was That A Giant Hot Dog That Just Drove By??

How many of you have actually gotten to see the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile? How about the Hershey Kiss Mobile or Mr. Peanuts Hot Rod?

Iconic vehicles like these have been around since 1918, the first being the Lifesaver's Pep-O-Mint car. So how often on your RV travels do you actually see a wacky wheeled oddity like one of these cruising down route 66 next to you? Have you seen one at a gas station? Or how about at a rest area?

These familiar Americana vehicles attract more attention than a dancing poodle no matter where they go, but it seems they aren’t actually spotted too often. Our challenge to you on your RV adventures this season, is to keep your eyes peeled for these one-of-a-kind billboards on wheels, and if you’re able to, get a picture with it and send it in with your story.

Remember, we’re still running our ‘submit your story and win!’ contest. Every entry wins a prize and the winner receives a gift certificate to our store. Who couldn’t use a little extra spending money to put towards their home on wheels? We can't wait to see your pictures!

RV Country Finds Some Different National Parks

It’s National Park Week and even if we all can’t get out and visit a national park  this week, these 5 are definitely worth making note of and planning a trip to go visit at least one of them this summer! Did you know there are 364 national parks?  We’ve all heard of the big ones – Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon, but did you have any idea that you can go scuba diving inside an old volcano in Oregon?  We didn’t either, but you can, and there are some other great parks as well, just read below!

Climb the tallest sand dunes in North America
At Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve the dunefield stretches 30 square miles. Activities abound at the park, but on the dunes themselves there's hiking, sledding, sandboarding and skiing to name a few. Special sand wheelchairs are even available so everyone can enjoy the dunes. During seasons that saw high rain or snowfall, Medano Creek can be high enough to create a beach at the base of the dunes.

Live the historic life on the C&O Canal
From 1850 to the early 1900s, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal ran parallel to the Potomac River for 184.5 miles, linking Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland. Today visitors can enjoy the park by going for a stroll or bike ride along the canal's towpath among other activities. Or, they can spend the night in an historic lockhouse (home of a canal lock operator.) Currently, five lockhouses are available to be rented, each capturing a different era in the canal's history. Some have all the amenities like stoves, showers and central AC/heat. Others offer a slightly more historically accurate experience without electricity, heat or running water. Visit the C&O Canal Trust to find out how to book a stay.

Visit the site of a leper colony
At Kalaupapa National Historical Park, learn the famous story of Father Damien and the leprosy patients he helped care for. Between 1866 and 1969, those suffering from leprosy – now known as Hansen's disease – were sent to live in isolation on the Kalaupapa peninsula of the island of Molokai. Historically, isolation was the only way to try and prevent the spread of Hansen's disease, for which there is now treatment. In fact, several surviving patients still reside in the Kalaupapa Settlement, sharing their memories and experiences. Be aware that access to Kalaupapa is restricted and visitors must make arrangements with the Hawaii Department of Health (808-567-6924) or Damien Tours (808-567-6171) to be allowed access.

Explore the world's longest known cave system
"Mammoth" is certainly a fitting name for Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The world's longest known cave system, its underground chambers extend 390 miles. A number of cave tours are available throughout the year, on a rotating basis by season. Intrepid young explorers should check out the Introduction to Caving tour, which teaches rules and techniques of cave exploration in some of the lesser visited areas. The more stalwart can strap on kneepads and headlamps and try the Wild Cave Tour. Above ground, there's boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing on 30 miles of river that meander through the park.

Go scuba diving inside an inland volcano
Oregon's Crater Lake was formed 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama violently erupted forming a caldera, or collapsed volcano. Over time, snow and rain caused the caldera to fill in, forming a deep, blue lake – one of the 10 deepest in the world. The park is open year-round, with activities like fishing, scuba diving, hiking and bicycling, but the path to the lake's shores is only accessible from July through October. In the colder months – which can see up to 44 feet of snow – cross country skiing, snowshoe and snowmobile trails are available.

RV Country Cooks up Some Simple Cowboy Beans

Here’s a rootin’ tootin’ simple new recipe we came across, and we just had to share it with our fellow RVers. It’s called ‘Cowboy Beans’ and what dinner out on the trail would be complete without these fibrous legumes? Young and old cow-poke alike are sure to enjoy this tasty side dish and it’ll give both age groups a reason to sing the old rhyme “Beans, beans, the musical fruit…” Errrr,  on second thought let’s just get to that delicious recipe, shall we?

 Ingredients

1 Pound Bacon
2 Cans of Large Bush’s Baked Beans
1/4 Cup of Brown Sugar

RV Lifestyle: Gas is up For Spring Break

As gas prices continue to rise, we have to wonder, how will this affect your travel plans for spring break? Many families take this time to see family for the Easter holiday. Some families take this time to reward the kids and themselves for surviving the harsh winter, the demands of school and work, and to remind them that summer is almost here.

As RVers, we probably have a slight advantage. We get to take our second home with us. We have the luxury of combining, travel, lodging, and dining into one comfortable package. Gas prices may be up, (Just take a look at this news story http://ow.ly/4FkOX) but that just means we need to get creative in how we save money in other areas.  Maybe we cook on the fire more and eat out less. Maybe we skip that round of putt-putt golf and throw a frisbee, or sit around gazing at the stars, and telling ghost stories instead.  One thing is for sure, we definitely have the advantage by living the RV lifestyle.

RV Country enjoys the drive in theater

Remember the nights of the old drive in movie theaters? Maybe it was a warm balmy spring evening and you had the top down or it was a crisp cool fall night and you were huddled up close…what ever happened to those magical moments we shared with the speaker boxes dangling from our car windows? Drive in movie theaters are few and far between these days. But as luck would have it we came across an article that Rebecca Dolan of AOL reader choice awards wrote and she has found 7 retro drive-in theaters! So, as you venture across this great country of ours in your RV adventure this season you now have yet another reason to stop into one of these great cities:
Mendon Drive-In, Mendon, Massachusetts
The Mendon Drive-In has been open since 1954, with its current owners running the show since 1987. Originally only a one screen theater, the Mendon gained a second in 1998 and its capacity was increased to 800. Open rain or shine, movies are screened Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
35 Milford St., Mendon, MA; 508-473-4958

Van Buren Drive-In, Riverside, California
Built on the site of a former orange farm, the Van Buren Drive-In opened in 1964. Over the years, it saw a few changes: Three screens added in 1975, remodeling in 2006 and even a new image in 2007 (to reflect the area's history, it adopted an "old California orange ranch" theme). Movies are shown Wednesday through Sunday nights. And, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, the Van Buren is the site of a swap meet.
3505 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA; 951-688-2360

Dixie Twin Drive-In, Dayton, Ohio
The 1950s are still alive at Ohio's Dixie Twin theater, open seasonally. First-run movies are shown Friday and Saturday nights on two large screens, and the lot can accommodate up to 900 cars. The theater is also open on Sunday mornings when it transforms into a flea market.
6201 N Dixie Dr, Dayton, OH; 937-890-5513

Capri Drive-In, Coldwater, Michigan
The single screen Capri Drive-In, with a 1,000 car capacity, opened in 1964. Its name was chosen through a contest, the winner of which got a brand new sewing machine. (My how incentives have changed.) Now with two screens, the theater shows movies on Friday and Saturday nights. According to the Capri, its concession stand often rates as one of the best in operation. But that's a discussion for the comments section below.
119 W Chicago Rd., Coldwater, MI; 517-278-5628

Starlite Drive-In, Amelia, Ohio
The Starlite Drive-In has been entertaining southwest Ohio moviegoers for more than 60 years. Keeping it really old school, the Starlite features only one screen and shows classic drive-in cartoons during intermission. Movies are shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
2255 State Route Ohio-125, Amelia, OH; 513-734-400

Tiger Drive-In, Tiger, Georgia
Originally opened in 1954, the Tiger Drive-In shut down in the mid 1980s due to waning viewership. But, luckily for the Tiger and sentimentalists in Georgia, the original owners' daughter reopened the theater in 2004 – in time for its golden anniversary. Now, movies are shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Tiger has also played host to events like flea markets, vegetable markets, antique car shows and art festivals.
2956 Old US Highway 441 South, Tiger, GA; 706-782-1611

Sunset Drive-In, Burlington, Vermont
One of the oldest theaters on the list, the Sunset Drive-In opened in 1948. Movies are shown nightly on four screens. The Sunset also features a playground and mini golf for those who just can't be cooped up in the car. Or, for those who can, Wi-Fi is also available.
Porters Point Road, Colchester, VT; 802-862-1800

Fulltime Families live the RV Lifestyle

Are you a fulltime family? A what you ask? Well if you were to look on the official website http://fulltimefamilies.com/ a fulltime family is described as:

full-time fam•i•ly
[foo l-tahym fam-uh-lee, fam-lee]
1. basic social unit consisting of parent/s and their child/ren, who sell everything they own, pack up themselves and what’s left into something slightly bigger than a breadbox and head out onto the open road!
2. basic social unit consisting of parent/s and their child/ren, who enjoying spending large amounts of quantity time with each other, exploring their world together – no matter what they call home!
3. group of people who are generally not blood relations but who share common attitudes, interests, or goals and, frequently, meet up on the road and/or travel together.
Usage in a sentence – We are a Fulltime Family!

If you have ever tossed around the idea of leaving behind life as you know it and heading for the open road, you should head over to the website and poke around a bit, you may decide this is the life for your family. As lovers of the RV Lifestyle, we think Fulltime Families is a great resource for all RVers!

Montana Named Number 1 Selling Fifth Wheel For The RV Lifestyle

For the tenth consecutive year, Statistical Surveys Names Montana

Innovations like the Montana Big Sky package with full paint have helped Montana earn the number one retail sales ranking.

Additional steps Montana is taking to further solidify the brand's leadership:

  • Giving customers the option of adding the Big Sky Package with full paint exterior to most Montana models.
  • Continuing to innovate with new floorplans, like the 3625RE which features a convenient "breakfast bar" in the rear living room and the 3700RL with a full wall hallway/bedroom slide that is prepped for side-by-side washer and dryer.
  • Ramping up production in their new plant which is significantly larger than the previous Montana production facility.

The importance of properly servicing your RV!

This week we're encouraging everyone to perform routine maintenance checks on your recreational vehicle! Time and time again our service department sees vehicles in need of expensive repairs that could have been avoided with a proper check-up.

For example, you may see us advertise a Free 10 Point Inspection occasionally... Use these!!! In case you needed further nudging, not servicing your appliances and engine components (all covered in our inspection) can void the terms of your warranty.

Real Life Example!
We had a customer who did not check his roof and seals for cracks. Due to those unattended cracks, water began to fill up underneath the laminate sidewalls and front cap. When it finally started to noticeably bubble out, IT WAS TOO LATE!
Check your roof & seals for cracks every 6 months as recommending by the manufacturer!

Instead of a couple hundred dollars to reseal the roof, we now have a VERY costly and time consuming job on our hands!

We don't do this to scare you or to try and drum up business for our service department, but because we honestly want to save you from an even greater expense and to keep you out on the road enjoying your RV as intended!

Make sure your summer vacation plans are headache free!

Have your RV checked out today!

RV Country Highlight: Pilot Programs In The Works For Safe Trip Planning Online

According to a recent USA Today report, there may soon be a way to plan your families trip according to which routes are safest.  The idea is that a family planning to drive from for example, Chicago to Disney World in Orlando could log onto a website to see which roads have the highest rates of traffic deaths and serious injuries and which roads are rated highest based on their engineering features. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is working with eight states in a pilot program to map their safest roads.

Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the foundation, says the information could be used within the next two to three years to map the nation's safest, as well as deadliest corridors, enabling safety-conscious drivers to shop for "Five-Star Safety" roads just as they do for automobiles.

"You could get in a car, turn on the in-vehicle navigation and request not only the quickest way from point A to point B, but the safest way," Kissinger says.

Public interest in such a service is strong: A 2009 foundation survey of 2,141 drivers found that 73% would consider using the data to pick roads in unfamiliar areas.

An interactive website from the University of Minnesota's Center for Excellence in Rural Safety that allows drivers to plot fatal crashes on a map is very popular. SafeRoadMaps.org was founded in 2008 and received more than 10 million hits by mid-2010, says center director Lee Munnich.

"You can analyze where traffic deaths have occurred over the last several years anywhere in the country," Munnich says. The foundation is working with Illinois, Kentucky, New Mexico, Utah, Florida, Iowa, Michigan and New Jersey and hopes to add more states this year.

Data on deaths, injuries and safety features eventually could be used by state and local officials to promote the safety of their roads, Kissinger says.

RV Country Destinations: The Best National Parks To Visit In The Wintertime

Zion National Park, Utah
Winters in Zion National Park are beautiful and mild, allowing hikers to experience many of Zion's trails in the winter. Some of the paths that get little sun might be icy, so check with the Zion Canyon Visitor Center before heading out. Use common sense and turn back if trail conditions are unsafe. Crampons are used by many who like to hike in the winter. Cross country skiing and snow shoeing are the top winter activities.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
Bryce Canyon is even more beautiful in the wintertime! The casual visitor will enjoy hopping in and out of the warm car at the overlooks to see the striking contrast of white snow, red rock, and blue sky. However, for the more adventurous winter recreation enthusiast, many opportunities beckon. Before setting out on your adventure, stop at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center to get up-to-date weather and safety information.

Banff National Park, Canada
The winter brings crisp, snowy days for tracking, skating, and alpine and nordic skiing. Visitors should always be especially careful of the wind chill. A temperature of -20°C on the thermometer may feel like -30°C with the wind chill. Regardless of the season, the temperature will fall about 1°C for every 200m of elevation gain.
After a day spent skiing, ice skating, or snow shoeing, be sure to hit the hot springs!

Olympic National Park, Washington
Hurricane Ridge is the place to be for outdoor winter recreation! Opportunities abound for snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing, childrens' sledding and more.
Miles of downhill and Nordic ski tracks are open late December through March, and a ski lift, towropes, and ski school are open 10am to 4pm weekends and holidays. Tubing areas for adults and children are open Friday through Sunday across from Hurricane Ridge Lodge.

Jasper National Park, Canada
Jasper is the largest and most northerly Canadian rocky mountain national park, part of a spectacular World Heritage Site. Comprised of delicate and carefully protected ecosystems, Jasper's scenery is none-the-less rugged and mountainous. In this special corner of Canada you can thrill to the thunder of Sunwapta Falls, enjoy the serene beauty of Mount Edith Cavell, connect with nature along 1,000-plus kilometres of trails, experience Athabasca Glacier up close or just resign yourself to a relaxing soak in Miette Hotsprings.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Mount Rainier National Park is a popular place to enjoy winter activities. The mountain receives abundant snowfall and the scenery is spectacular. With the arrival of snow in late October, Mount Rainier's beauty changes and so do its challenges. Visitors planning to travel to the park in winter should familiarize themselves with winter travel tips, road status reports, and be prepared for potential winter hazards.
In winter, recreational opportunities are numerous. A winter visit to Mount Rainier can include ranger guided snowshoe walks, Paradise snowplay, camping, snowboarding, and skiing.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Winter means snow in the Rockies and snow means fun! Snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the lower valleys, winter mountaineering in the high country, downhill skiing at Eldora and Winter Park, sledding and tubing at Hidden Valley. Access roads are kept open and provide the winter traveler with a panorama of the high mountains. In the Park, Moraine Park, Longs Peak, and Timber Creek campgrounds are open all year. Once the snows begin, Longs Peak and Timber Creek are not plowed, so you have to carry supplies to your campsite. Moraine Park is the only campground with water in winter. Park dump stations are closed.

Yellowstone, Wyoming
There is so much to see and do at the Nations most famous of National Parks. Why not go skiing, snow shoeing, or snowmobiling in the most beautiful of places! Winter dates, activities, rules, etc. can change unexpectedly. Always check at the gate or visitor centers for the most current information. A winter visit to Yellowstone National Park will give you lasting memories of snowy landscapes, steaming geyser basins, and incomparable wildlife viewing.  Remember,Yellowstone can be the coldest place in the continental United States in winter with temperatures of -30°F not uncommon, so be ready to bundle up! Way up!

Joshua Tree National Park offers visitors endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. October through May, call ahead and reserve a spot on the popular Keys Ranch guided walking tour. If solitude is what you are after, plan an all-day hike into the backcountry. If you would like to experience the desert from the seat of a mountain bike, the park offers an extensive network of dirt roads that make for less crowded and safer cycling than the paved main roads. Joshua Tree is a popular rock climbing area. Many visitors enjoy just watching the climbers in action. Winter brings cool days, around 60°F (15°C), and freezing nights. It occasionally snows at higher elevations.

Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more.Yosemite is full of opportunity! Badger Pass ski area is home to the oldest downhill skiing area in California and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding from mid-December through March. An outdoor ice skating rink in Yosemite Valley (at Curry Village) is open from mid-November to mid-March.
