RV Country: Toy Haulers are here!

You may remember a past blog we wrote about the Sandsport Toy Haulers. Well, we’re back with another one to let you know that they are here! The toy hauler category has gained popularity over the year, so much in fact that we’re having trouble keeping up with all the requests! We’re so excited to have everyone come down and take a look at these exceptional units. We have a large selection to choose from. We have used toy haulers and new toy haulers for sale. And we provide RV financing! Our newest line of toy haulers, the Sandsport by Pacific Coach Works is a must see! The Sandsport was unveiled at the RV Dealers International Convention back in October, and as we’re about to point out it has many features you won’t find on its competition.

The Sandsport 18FKSL model has two LPG tanks, whereas the Eclipse Attitude 18FKG model only has one. Why is this important? Well, having two means not having to go to the store and hope they sell propane when your first tank runs out while you’re in the middle of cooking a fabulous dinner for your family. The Sandsport also boasts an electric awning. Perfect for those days that you want to sit outside and enjoy the rain, but don’t really want to stand out in the rain getting soaking wet while cranking open that manual awning that the Eclipse has. An exterior ladder will also come in handy should you need to gain access to the roof for any reason and the Sandsport has a very handy exterior ladder indeed. The Eclipse... no exterior ladder. And how would you like FOUR stabilizing jacks? Wouldn’t having four make you feel that much better versus the two that the Eclipse has? How about a radius edged roof similar to a motorhome rather than a flat roof - you guessed it. The Sandsport gives you this fancy little perk as well.

RV Country: A delicious breakfast, dutch oven style

Here’s a delicious recipe sure to get your day started off right, and the family will love you for it. Simple, yet complex with flavor, we give you "French Toast Casserole". You may be wondering if you have to prepare it the night before, but the answer my friends, is no. This is the best part... You can prepare it in the morning and it's ready in about 30-45 minutes. Here’s what you’ll need to have on hand:

1 large loaf French bread
8 eggs
3 cups milk
4 Tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
4 Tbsp. butter, cut into small pieces

Tear bread into 1-2 inch chunks. Put pulled apart bread in a 12" Dutch oven. Beat together all remaining ingredients, except butter. Pour over bread. Dot the top with butter. Bake with 9 coals on bottom and 15 on top. It should be done in 30-45 minutes, when eggs are set.

RV Country: Quartzsite, here we come!

The time has FINALLY arrived! We have been counting down the days to this huge event since October. We’ve talked about it, written about it, we’ve even dreamed about it! Did you know that we’ve even been moving inventory to Quartzsite since after Christmas and finally... finally we get to say "WE'RE HERE!". Set up has begun and you can literally feel the excitement in the air as we all prepare for this grand RV show. If you’re wondering why we get so excited about it, let us take you on a little tour (blog style). When you first roll up to Quartzsite, it's hard to imagine just how huge this event really is. There are literally thousands of people from all over the United States and Canada that visit here every year to take part in this event. And it's not just a weekend show. This show is practically a month long, and most everyone stays for the duration. RVers have even earned the name ‘modern day gypsies’ when they come out to this show. As you find the spot you’ll call home for the next few weeks, you’ll start to feel it - the excitement. It's all around you. The people, the food, the entertainment, the gem show, the car show, the new RV’s! It's just all so much! It's almost sensory overload. It's really one of those events you just have to experience to understand the excitement we all feel.
We’re not 100% finished with our set up yet, but we do have our sign up directing you where to go to find us. If you can find the big white Main Event Tent, then you can find us... We’re right next to it! We’ve also got motor homes rolling in and lining up and we even have some salesmen there already!

Last year the Keystone Montana was our top seller, so this year we made sure to bring in plenty for everyone! The Keystone Montana is the number one selling fifth wheel in America, and that was certainly proven true last year when we sold out of them at Quartzsite. The Montana is a perfect fit for anyone that enjoys the comfort of home, plus has the need for a work space. It also has a fireplace! Moving on to the kitchen, the Keystone Montana features an island with enough counter space to prepare a feast and enough pantry shelving to stock up for the entire month you’ll be in Quartzsite - this kitchen is fabulous! The bedroom is equipped with a king size bed and a spacious shower with sun roof, and plenty of closet and storage space. If you want to know more, we have a video just for you. Our vice president, Curt Curtis was gracious enough to let us record him explaining why he chooses to stay in the Montana every year that he goes to Quartzsite, and he even gives a nice tour of the 3400 model.

Monaco's in Motion for the RV Life Style

Monacos in Motion is an international chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association. Although they are not regionally focused, they have members from all over the United States and Canada. FMCA membership and ownership of Monaco motorized brand models manufactured by Monaco Coach Corporation, Royale Coach, coaches manufactured by Executive Industries and all Monaco coaches manufactured prior to 1992 can be members. Annual dues are $15.00 and there is a one-time initiation fee of $25.00.

Ok, so what does belonging to Monaco’s in Motion actually mean? What do they do? Their members design and lead caravans for other members to explore various parts of North America. A caravan will generally consist of fifteen coaches and lasts two to four weeks with approximately four to eight planned stops. Past caravans have included stopping at Christmas light displays in Tennessee, The Natchez Trace and a Whole Lot More, Glaciers to Geysers, California Dreaming, and many more that you can see on their website under the "past caravans" tab.

The next caravan they have planned is to Chicago, and is appropriately titled "The Wonderful World of Navistar – Plus!" If you are interested in joining up with them, there is a link to fill out an application and email for more information. Sounds like this one is going to be pretty fun!

On the Monacos in Motion website they have a Wall of Honor tab, and we thought this was a lot of fun! It showcases everyone in the club who has led or co-led a caravan. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll see your name on the Wall of Honor!

Count Down to Quartzsite!

As children we often counted down to days like our birthday, a day at Disneyland, or Christmas, but at RV Country we count down to Quartzsite! We even have a countdown ticker on our blog! We just can’t wait until this gathering in the desert begins! For us, the countdown begins in October. You may think we’re kidding, but we aren’t. It’s the anticipation of moving all of our units from Fresno to the empty desert sands of Quartzsite for the biggest RV show in the country! It's the eagerness of watching the big white tent go up. RV Country joins corporate council to help ‘Children’s Hospital Central California’.

We’re so proud to announce our new involvement at ‘Children’s Hospital Central California’. Joining as part of the corporate council will give us a chance to help make a difference in the lives of children. The Children's Hospital Foundation has launched The Corporate Council to encourage companies’ awareness of the services and patient care offered at the hospital, and to contribute time and fundraising efforts. Medical treatment affects children differently than adults, even if they suffer from the same illness or injury. Simply put, growing children have different bodies than grownups. A routine procedure for an adult may have serious implications for a developing child. Children require specialized pediatric care from practiced professionals who not only identify a young patients immediate medical needs, but also recognize the long-term effects of procedures and treatments on a child. That's why it is so important to us at RV Country to help out when, and where we can. We’re hoping you will too!

The hospital has volunteer positions where each year, more than 500 Children’s volunteers, ranging in ages from as young as 13 to over 90, donate their time and energy to support our mission to provide high quality comprehensive health care to children. If you’re unable to volunteer, you can also make an on-line donation. Mans best friend found at Parker RV Show!

Our Puppy ~~Sales~~ Rescue Crew!

As you may know, we are spending the month of December near the entrance to the Bluewater Casino in Parker Arizona for our annual RV Show! We just had a really heartwarming thing happen and wanted share it with you.

One of our sales guys noticed a little dog milling around inside our display. He didn't think too much of it since there is an RV park on the casino grounds and figured it's owner was nearby.

Well, the next morning, our salesperson, Jorge D'Abramo, saw the unattended puppy across the street running near the road, but he was unable to catch him! Not long after that, a man in a Holiday Rambler motorhome pulled up asking if anyone had seen a little dog! Jorge explained the sighting and that he was nearby and they traded contact information in case there was another sighting.

Lo and behold, later on that day they open up a Keystone fifth wheel and what do they see...?! A little puppy dog (his name is Bunches!) scared and nestled into the storage shelf behind the bed!! The sales gang immediately called up the man and a very cheerful reunion took place!

It turns out Bunches is an 8 month old Shih Tzu who escaped from the Ferreria's RV. Roy's wife Lydia was overjoyed to receive her little one back and we've been told they haven't left each others side since!

We're so glad Bunches is ok and even happier to make some new friends in a non-traditional way!

Downtown Fresno Christmas Parade!

It's that time of year again! Jingle bells ringing and shoppers bustling about to find the treasures that will go beneath the carefully decorated tree. In Fresno, Mid Valley Disposal is busy preparing for their big event... They'll be presenting the 82nd annual Christmas parade! The 2011 Parade Theme is "Celebrate Fresno & Who We Are!" ... Celebrating our diversity and heritage, our cultural arts, and our agricultural products, all with Christmas spirit! The parade will take place on December 10th and will start at 11:00 a.m. You’ll want to get there a little bit early for a good spot.

The folks from Toys for Tots will be present, so be sure to bring an unwrapped toy or two for a needy child in our community. Every child dreams of gifts at Christmas, and if we all work together, imagine how many dreams we can make come true this year! The community food bank will also be at the parade taking your donations. Bring your non perishable food items and help to feed those in need! After all, 'tis the season for giving!

You’ll be able to Park for free on parade day in any downtown city parking lot or at any metered spot. (We’re not sure if there will be room for your RV though). This year, the parade will be broadcast live by KSEE24. Sponsors and volunteers are still needed, so why not show your holiday spirit by donating your time? Meteor Craters to the RV Lifestyle

50,000 years ago an asteroid decided that Winslow, Arizona looked like the perfect place to crash into Earth and create a crater that is about one mile across, 550 feet deep, and 2.4 miles in circumference. All to ~~crater~~, err...cater to the RV Lifestyle. Today this area is known as Meteor Crater RV Park. The park has 71 pull-through RV and camping spaces, private restroom and shower facilities, plus two designated ADA and special needs accessible restroom and shower rooms. The park is also fully fenced with a secure gate. Pets are allowed and there is also a laundry room. Meteor Crater RV Park is in a great location.

It is close enough for visitors to take day trips to the Grand Canyon - a must see for anyone within visiting range. It is after all one of the seven natural wonders of the world!

There’s also the Navajo and Hopi Nations Tour where you can experience the mysteries of the ancient past and unique modern culture of Navajos and Hopis who share more than 25,000 square miles of striking desert and mesa country.

Or take a trip over to the fascinating remains of a forest turned to stone to the Petrified Forest National Park. The 94,000 acre park includes a visitor center, restaurant, gift shop and scenic drive with parking areas and interpretative signs to help visitors understand this rare geologic phenomenon. If you don’t feel like venturing into town, you can always take a walk over to the visitors center at Meteor Crater Park, where there’s an 80 seat wide screen theater, an indoor crater viewing area, crater trail access, interactive discovery center, artifacts and exhibits, gift shop, and Subway restaurant.

You’ll want to be back at the RV Park by night fall and you’ll definitely want to set up your chairs outside, grab a drink and maybe a snack and prepare for one of the most amazing sites you may ever see. The open sky full of bright stars is truly amazing and the possibility of witnessing a falling star is likely. The sunsets and sunrises are also one of the beautiful, natural experiences you won’t want to miss. While there is a lot to do away from the park, there are certainly plenty of reasons to stay.

If you missed the latest news in the toy hauler category, be prepared for some excitement! Pacific Coachworks has introduced the Sand Sport toy hauler line with several innovative features designed to meet the needs of the most demanding off-road enthusiast. Pacific Coachworks General Manager Jeff Daily said the new Sand Sport has “the look, specifications and price point that will surely meet or exceed the needs of even the most demanding toy hauler consumer.” And if that isn’t enough to get your attention, maybe this will...dealer response has been amazing, so much so, that orders are flying in.

It seems that toy haulers are this years ‘must-have’ item. Toy hauler trailers are divided into two separate compartments with the storage section opening directly to the outside to allow for easy access to the cargo.

According to RV Business, “a study commissioned by RVIA shows that even during a time of economic turmoil and fluctuating fuel prices, RV trips remain the least costly, 28% to 59% less expensive than other types of vacations for a family of four. For an “empty-nester” couple traveling by RV, savings were 15% to 45%”.

Could savings like that be one of the reasons people are turning to toy haulers? With a toy hauler, a family has all the comforts of an RV and the ability to bring their ATV’s with them. This gives the family the travel savings they need, the luxury of ‘home’ that they want, and the enjoyment of having their off road vehicle with them, which will help cut down on entertainment expense.

We can't contain our excitement for Quartzsite!

Are you as excited as we are to get out to the desert in January and get the party started at Quartzsite?! There’s just something about this event that gets us buzzing around here... From October until we leave we’re dreaming of the 1,000,000 people that come out, the food, the entertainment, and of course the BIG WHITE TENT! It's a 20 acre facility with FREE customer parking! Its 69,000 sq. ft. of fully carpeted indoor exhibit area! Please tell us you’re just as excited as we are! You must be, its the largest gathering of RV’ers on Earth!

If you haven’t been a part of this amazing event in the past, this is the year to do it. What better way to relax after the holidays than to take off for the Arizona desert and explore acres of beautiful RVs, exhibits of all kinds, a great car show, a world renowned rock and gem show, and countless flea markets to visit. Mmmmm, we can taste it now, the Thanksgiving feast that’s right around the corner. We know many of our RV friends spend Thanksgiving at an RV park or camp ground and we keep hearing about this gourmet "trash can turkey". Though the name isn't all at once appealing, we hear the end result is fantastic!

So, as we are fast approaching the season, we thought we’d hustle up and share the recipe with you. We also found a video courtesy of The RV Cooking Show that we are going to include. If you try out this tasty recipe be sure to let us know if you enjoyed it!

The first thing you will need is a 20 gallon galvenized steel trash can. You’ll want to treat the trash can with a water and white vinegar mixture to remove the metallic taste from the can. Add 1 gallon of white vinegar and fill the trash can up half way with water. Scrub the trash can and let it sit for about 6 hours - swishing the mixture onto the sides of the trash can every half an hour. Once this step is done, be sure to rinse the trash can really well.

While you are letting your trash can “season” you can prepare the cooking station. You’ll want to get a large piece of aluminum foil and place it on the ground. Be sure it is in a non-flammable area. Then you will want to get a 12x12 piece of wood and cover it with aluminum foil and an 18” dowel, also covering it with aluminum. You’re going to mount the dowel into the 12x12 piece of wood for the turkey to sit on.

Now that your trash can is ready and your cooking station is ready...onto the bird!

You can cook up to a 13 pound bird this way. You can season it if you want, but if this is the first time you have tried a trash can turkey, we suggest trying it without seasoning this time. Be sure to clean your turkey and then place it legs down over the dowel. Next, place the trash can over the turkey. Pour a 10 pound bag of self lighting charcoal on the top of the trash can and at the bottom of the trash can. You DO NOT want to use any lighter fluid at all. Let the charcoal flame up and cook for 90 minutes. After 90 minutes rake the coals off the top and away from the bottom of the can and using gloves remove the can - caution - it will be very hot!

RV Lifestyle: Thor Motor Coach Recall for Diesel Engine

Recall. When ever I start to type the word "recall" I am reminded of the commercial for Ricola cough drops, and in my mind I sing ♫ Recalllll.... ♫ just like the narrator of the Ricola commercial. Okay, so maybe that was more information than you needed, but it might help get important information like this next recall stuck in your head.

If you're the proud owner of a 2011 or 2012 Thor Tuscany, Astoria or Avanti, equipped with a Cummins ISX or ISL diesel engine you’ll want to make an appointment with a service department near you. According to RV Daily Report “The V-band clamp assembly, part numbers Q187684, Q187685, and Q187686, used to connect the inlet and outlet cone sections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) include a T-bolt which can fracture and fail when subjected to stress or load. A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect.

If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and a fire. If both clamps fail, there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard. TMC is working with Cummins to identify and notify owners of the recall campaign. Repairs will be performed by authorized Cummins dealers free of charge. Owners may contact Cummins at (812) 377-5000.

The NHTSA number for the Cummins recalls is 11E-031. Cummins' recall campaign number is C1154.”

Fall Foliage You'll Fall in Love With

One great thing about our beautiful country is that we have the freedom to go wherever we want, whenever we want. It's like the song says “This land is your land, this land is my land” and if you live in a state that doesn’t get to see much fall foliage (ahem...Florida) why not pack up your RV and head out to somewhere you can witness the colorful miracle that is the Autumn changing of the leaves? To make the trip even sweeter, how about a visit to some of the most amazing national parks the good ol' USA has to offer! Here are some of the prime parks you won't want to miss this Fall:
1. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area - Peak colors expected middle to end of October. On October 18, a hiking event to Whiskeytown Falls offer a perfect way to view the foliage during the peak season.
2. Curecanti National Recreational Area - Peak colors begin in late September and run through the end of October.
3. Natchez Trace Parkway - In middle to late October, the maple, hickory, oak and other hardwood trees begin to change colors.
4. Glacier National Park - The bright yellow and gold colors on the aspen and larch trees run through mid-October covering the trails around the park, but particularly along Summit Trail. For more information on the best trails to see colors or view photos of the fall colors, visit Glacier’s Facebook page.
5. Flight 93 National Memorial - The trees across the Flight 93 National Memorial begin to turn around mid-October. Check out the Honor Flight webcam today to find instant inspiration for a trip to the site or to take a virtual fall foliage tour.
6. Great Smokey Mountains National Park - The Great Smokey Mountains boast over 130 different tree species, many of which produce breathtaking Autumnal colors. Peak foliage viewing depends greatly on the various levels of elevation found within the park, but overall, the Smokies’ foliage shows run from late September through October.
7. Zion National Park - Peak foliage colors appear at the end of October and into the first few days of November.
8. Shenandoah National Park - Peak colors in the upper elevations begin early to mid-October with lower elevations peaking at the end of October into November.
9. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park - Rich with sugar maples and 400-year-old hemlocks, this site boasts outstanding fall foliage each year. This year’s prime viewing is expected from mid-October through early November.
10. Apostles Islands National Lakeshore - Peak foliage viewing various depending on inland or coastal location, however the foliage show runs from late September through October. Additionally, many bird species are migrating through the park right now, so foliage seekers get an extra show from Mother Nature.

Super Cool, "Cooler" Corn On The Cob

Have you ever done it? Have you ever heard of anyone else doing it? What is it, you ask? Why it's only the newest, most innovative way to cook your corn on the cob...Coleman cooler style.

Well, for starters corn on the cob isn’t just for summer anymore, and for those of you that enjoy camping, cooking out, simplicity, and walks on the beach (uh, scratch that last one, wrong blog) or for those of you that just want to have a good conversation piece, this way of cooking corn is for you. You’re going to want to shuck the ears first and scrub off the silk strands. Then put the corn in your trusty cooler (not the one that’s full of beverages and ice). Once the corn is in, fill the cooler with boiling water and shut the lid. You'll want to do it a bit ahead of time because it takes about 2 hours, but you can leave it in longer to keep it hot. Prepare your dinner, and by the time you sit down to eat, your corn is going to be perfectly done.

This ingenious way of cooking corn has another perk... If it's cold outside, you have a nice toasty bench to sit on while you wait for dinner to be ready! This is also a great and super easy way to make a large batch if you're feeding a group. Your friends will be amazed at your clever corn cooking skills, and you’re likely to be the topic of conversation for quite awhile.

Haunted Camp Grounds and RV Parks

So, you’re looking for a haunting good time this Halloween? The typical campgrounds just aren’t going to cut it for you - the ghost seeking adventurer? Then you may want to try one of these camp grounds where the legends say there’s more than the wind that blows through after midnight.

Santa Fe National Forest
There is a scarey story behind the Holy Ghost campground. Legend has it Holy Ghost Canyon, where the campground is located , is haunted by a spirit of a priest killed by Pueblo people in the late 1680s. As the only allegedly haunted campground in the Forest Service, it is recommended visitors bring flashlights and lots of campfire ghost stories. For a place with only haunting beauty there is Jacks Creek campground. Set at the furthest reaches of State Route 63 and near the headwaters of the "talking" Pecos River, Jacks Creek campground, with its nearby horse camp, is located in a mountain meadow surrounded by thick aspen groves. The Pecos Wilderness beckons visitors from just over the ridge to come and explore while a breeze through the aspen whispers "set a spell."

Fernwood Campground
For many years this area was considered sacred by the Esalen Indians and today stands as a commercial campground. According to employees and guests the ghost of an Indian wearing a corn mask has been seen between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. near the cabins.

DarkSyde Acres Haunted Campground
A Michigan campground located in Hillsdale County approximately five miles north of Jonesville and just over a mile from Mosherville. Close to both the Indiana and Ohio state borders, the rustic campsite and adjacent DarkSyde Acres Haunted House are set on 38 acres with over 70,000 square feet of indoor haunted house attractions. In addition to the attractions, according to the DarkSyde website there have been reports of supernatural events, and witnesses say the location is really haunted.

The Canyon Motel RV Park

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing amount of guests that have reported strange occurrences in their overnight Caboose visits. The reports of strange sounds in the night, the lights going on and off for no reason, and even the sight of an old conductor walking through the caboose swinging a lantern in the middle of the dark night. A housekeeper even reports hearing talking or whispering going on in the middle of the day while she works. She knows it’s weird, but also points out that nobody else is even around. They all say there is some type of inexplicable synergy taking place inside the Cabooses.

Sportsman's RV Park
Some say this RV Park in Libby, Montana is haunted. "It is said that many aimless souls lost their lives waiting for work at the site, camping in the woods when they could not afford a stay at the Inn. There is also a tale that every spring, thunderstorms bring about the shadowy figure of a ghost that wears a hooded poncho as he floats above the ground." Boo!

RV Travelers Spooky Cider Recipe

You’re backed in to your favorite spot at your favorite RV park for Halloween. Your decorations are up, and the RV is looking very spooky indeed. Awesome. But, this year you want to add something extra... After all, don't good neighbors offer up treats at the holidays? Why not serve something festive, (if not slightly ghoulish) that all your friends and fellow RV'ers can enjoy, like a deliciously bewitching drink! Imagine... It's Hallow's Eve... a dark and scary night, and everyone's senses are turned up just a notch and here you come dressed like something from the Living Dead offering them a smoldering concoction to warm their throats. Will they drink it, or will they politely decline?
Oh they'll drink it. After all, it's really an innocent warm apple cider, but adding a few raspberries and some dry ice served in a festive goblet will make it seem like the drink of Dracula himself. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients

10 cups Apple Cider
1 (12-ounce) pack of Frozen Red Raspberries, lightly-sweetened (Raspberries will give the illusion of blood!)
5 sticks of Cinnamon

Method

In a large saucepan, boil apple cider, raspberries and cinnamon together.
Reduce heat, when the mixture starts boiling.
Cover and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove the mixture from heat.
Strain berries and cinnamon from mixture and cover it until serving time.
Serve while warm.
Makes 12 servings.

***Here are a few important things you need to know about dry ice:
When putting Dry ice in any drink or container it will bubble until the drink freezes around the piece of dry ice. The ice is so cold the drink freezes and the smoke stops. To solve this use smaller pieces of dry ice, warm the drink so it does not get too cold.
Do not add the dry ice ahead of time. Wait until the guests arrive since the effect of the dry ice is short. Keep the unused dry ice wrapped as much as possible and purchase right before the party. In your freezer dry ice will evaporate and just disappear from it's packaging.
And most important - When using dry ice in punches or drinks there are some cautions to keep in mind. Accidentally drinking a large piece of dry ice could cause some serious harm. Dry ice when handled directly can seriously burn you. It's like a freezer burn or frostbite.

Now, find a great serving bowl like a black cauldron (these are easy to find this time of year at any of your common department stores) and add your punch. You can also freeze tiny plastic babies, body parts, eyeballs or bugs in ice cubs and add them to the punch as well. The Hook of RV Country

Halloween is fast approaching, so we thought we’d have some fun by adding a new twist to an old urban legend!

The Hook of RV Country

A teenage boy drove his date in his fathers brand new A.C.E. motorhome to a dark and deserted Lovers' Lane for a make-out session. After turning on 98.9 on the touch screen LCD radio for mood music, he leaned over and began kissing the girl. The A.C.E. was spacious and cozy and the two quickly felt at ease.

A short while later, the music suddenly stopped and an announcer's voice came on, warning in an urgent tone that a convicted murderer had just escaped from the state insane asylum — which happened to be located not far from Lovers' Lane — and that anyone who noticed a strange man lurking about with a hook in place of his right hand should immediately report his whereabouts to the Fresno police.

The girl became frightened and asked to be taken home. The boy, feeling bold, locked all the doors of the A.C.E. instead and, assuring his date they would be safe, attempted to kiss her again. She became frantic and pushed him away, insisting that they leave. Relenting, the boy peevishly jerked the RV into gear drove the girl home passing his place of employment on the way -Paul Evert’s RV Country.

When they arrived at the girl's house she got out of the RV, and, reaching to close the door, began to scream uncontrollably. The boy ran to her side to see what was wrong and there, dangling from the door of the A.C.E. motorhome handle, was a bloody hook.

Thermostat got you feeling a little dim?

We’ve heard it numerous times, “I wish the display on my thermostat was brighter.” Special thanks to Family Motor Coach Association for publishing a short ‘how-to” article on just how to get that thermostat a little brighter so you can read it! This tech and travel tip happens to come from their February 2011 edition:
You can make the display nearly twice as bright by removing the blue filters on the light bulbs. (This applies only to Dometic Duo-Therm Comfort Control Center five-button thermostats #310 9228 0001 — white; and #310 9228 019 — black.) Here’s how:

Un-clip the thermostat from the holder — top or bottom center — and find the two small, black, round bulb holders. Remove the bulb assembly by inserting a small blade screwdriver into the center slot of the assembly and twist 1/8-turn counterclockwise. Lift the bulb assembly out and gently remove the tiny blue filter from the bulb. Reassemble and return the thermostat cover to its holder. The brightness of the display will be sharply improved.

It's an afternoon of ales & lagers, chardonnays & merlots, chili & beerocks, blues & rock, and so much more. And if you're in the area, it would be a great time to swing by and say hello to everyone at one of your favorite places - RV Country! RV Country in Quartzsite, Arizona 2012

For over 35 years now, there has been a group of people traveling to a once barren area known as Quartzsite, Arizona. These seekers come by the thousands and are often referred to as "gypsies of the modern world". Entering the grounds of Quartzsite is like entering another world... Back to the good old days in many ways. Though now, this place is no longer barren, but has a plethora of state of the art facilities.

Once a year, for one week in January, these RV gypsies pack into Quartzsite for one of the largest RV shows in America. According to the Arizona Highway Department, as many as 750,000 to 1,000,000 people converge on this sleepy little desert town, located just 20 miles east of the California border on Interstate 10. It is host to the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show and the rock, gem and mineral shows, craft show, plus numerous flea markets. Admission and parking are both FREE.

There is a 69,000 sq. ft. fully carpeted indoor exhibit area, an outside midway, free live entertainment, and tons to do and see! Paul Evert's RV Country is very proud to remain the exclusive RV dealer of the event, and as in years past, you can find us right next to the big white tent. An Inspiring Lake for the RV Lifestyle

If you haven’t been to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, you simply must go. Its among one of the most beautiful places America has to offer. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet and a violent volcanic past. This place truly is inspiring. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom, a place any parent would love to bring their children and feel privileged to do so. In the winter the snow starts to accumulate in October and doesn’t melt until around June. But when that snow does melt away you’ll want to be there to spend lots of sunny days pic-nicing and just breathing in mother nature.

Crater Lake also has a web cam! How much fun is that? That way if you’re thinking about going you can always check to see how much snow is there (if any) they also have a current conditions page that can help you plan your trip!

Close by is Mazama Campground open from June-September. It has has approximately 200 forested sites. Running water, flush toilets, bear lockers, picnic tables, and fire rings are provided. Collection of dead and downed wood is allowed for campfires with the fire rings. A range of site sizes are available; tent to RV lengths. Sites can accommodate up to 8 people and 2 vehicles. Reservations can be made calling 1-888-774-2728 or on-line. Around busy, holiday and vacation weekends reservations are recommended.

With all the recent RV shows in Oregon, we even found a day to explore the Crater Lake area ourselves! We're always asking you for pictures, so this time we're sharing some of our own!

The Rogue River had dozens of trails to explore!

Everywhere you looked the foliage was brilliantly green and river was amazing.

Found a map to a place called "Rabbit Ears" 30 minutes outside of Crater Lake. It was an easy hike with a great view!

Look close, can you see the lodge? Several trails wound upwards to offer new views of the lake, but record snowfall only allowed hikers to go halfway.

Reuben Sandwiches Made Easy!

Here’s another easy recipe borrowed from the RV Centennial Cookbook. You can even sign up for weekly recipe's from the Rv Centennial Cookbook. (Just click here) This recipe was submitted by Jan Powell of Bolivar, Mo. She and her family have been full-time RVers since October 2009 and own a HitchHiker fifth wheel pulled by a one-ton dually truck. Its a Reuben sandwich, but this one is quick and easy!

Ingredients:

Rye bread
Sauerkraut
Sliced Swiss cheese
Canned corned beef
Thousand Island dressing
Margarine

Instructions:
Make a sandwich with a slice of Swiss cheese on the rye bread; place a slice or two of corned beef on the cheese, and layer with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing.

Butter the outsides of the bread and cook in electric skillet or on stovetop like you would a toasted cheese sandwich. Eat hot. We also use cast iron pie holders over a campfire to heat the sandwiches.

Excited about fall? So are more than two dozen campgrounds and RV parks in California! They are so excited in fact, that they are offering a two-night, $50 weekend promo the first weekend of October. Executive Director of the California Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, Debbie Sipe explained that they are doing this to help attract campers who have not camped in the fall before, and to help promote camp-california.com. You can find a list of participating sites by going to the camp-california website, then to the mail page where you will find a section titled ‘$50 Camping Weekend’. So, for only $50.00 here is what you can expect from the participating parks:

A tent or RV site for 4 people with full hookups (or if not available, at least water and electricity) for Friday & Saturday, September 30 - October 1, 2011. Park may extend this offer to other types of accommodations such as cabins, teepees, etc.
Possible additions: Local Transient Occupancy Tax, fees for extra cars, more than 4 people, etc.
Reservations are required. Offer honored pending space availability. May not be used with another special offer or discount.

The first official day of fall is September 23rd, so be sure to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather before it disappears. RV Country Routine Maintenance

If you’re new to owning an RV, you’ve probably got a lot of questions. Going through your owners manual can seem overwhelming, and when you bought your unit, you were probably overwhelmed with excitement and received more information than you remember. That's another reason why we thought going over some commonly asked questions with our service manager Hank Dudley was such a great idea... kind of like a review to refresh the minds of new and old RV owners of things they may have forgotten.

One question we’re asked by new RV owners is: How often should I bring in my motor home for routine maintenance? When we asked Hank this question, he explained that “All the new units will come with a warranty packet and it will let you know when it's time to bring the unit in for an oil change for the engine, transmission and the generator. It will also let you know what the tire pressure should be kept at. The roof will need to be inspected at least every six months. The appliances will need to be serviced yearly, and the wheel bearings will also need to be inspected yearly. Tires should be replaced every four to five years going by the manufacturer date.” Hank stressed that the biggest item to remember is to check your batteries. “They need to be checked every month when in use, and be sure to keep them charged and clean.”

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed, or if you have misplaced your warranty packet, that's okay! All the service advisers keep routine maintenance books right by their side. All you have to do is give them a call and they will be happy to let you know when you need to come in and see them. You can also schedule your service appointment right on-line if you’d like.

A recipe sure to be loved by RV Country friends

Here’s a recipe that's sure to stimulate your taste buds! Its called ‘Three Berry Pudding Cake’ Submitted by Tina Praesel to the RV Centennial Cookbook by Evada Cooper. This cookbook is a collection of recipes from fellow RVers. This edition was published in April of 2011. According to the website GoodReads , Evada Cooper invited fellow RVers to send in their easy-to-assemble recipes for The RV Centennial Cookbook. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) is officially endorsing the book as one of its centennial promotions. The book contains 100 recipes, historical RV information, RV maintenance tips and instructions on playing nostalgic games such as "Kick the Can" and "Hide and Seek."

Produced by Texas State Technical College Publishing, the company has hopes hopes that RVers will submit more recipes to be included in a new edition expected to be published in 2012. And now without further hesitation we present to you, the delicious, mouth-watering, recipe!

Ingredients:
Sugar-free angel food cake (or get it already baked from the store)
1 large box of sugar-free vanilla pudding
1 small container of sugar-free nondairy whip topping
1 bag of three types of frozen berries

Instructions:
First thaw the whip topping in fridge overnight. Next, mix pudding according to box. You can save out ¼ cup of whip topping for decoration on top. Fold the whip topping into pudding. Now tear up the cake and put half into the container of choice (I put it into a glass bowl so you can see the nice mix). You now will layer it using cake, berries, and pudding mix, ending with pudding mix.

Mmmm, now doesn’t that sound divine! If you happen to make any extra, our sales office is open 7 days a week!

Do I need an inverter to enjoy the RV Lifestyle?

We’re back with another question from an RV Country friend, and another answer from our Service Manager, Hank.

Today's question is:“Do fifth-wheel travel trailers have inverters? If they do not, then I need one with a generator, right?”

Hank tells us that “most fifth-wheel trailers do not have inverters, and only special order trailers come with a generator. However, most can have a generator or inverter installed, but you will not need an inverter if you have a generator.

An inverter takes the place of a generator if you are dry camping (parking anywhere without or with limited amenities) and want to watch TV or make coffee without starting the generator because of noise or fumes. The inverter will take the 12 volt from your battery and convert it to 120 volts.” Remember, if you are going to use a generator, you must also be sure and have a working carbon-monoxide detector installed.

The first questions we’re going to address is:
“What psi should my tires be at?”

Hank explains that “all trailers should be five pounds under the recommended pressure on the tire. This allows the hot air to expand and not blow out the tire. For coaches - it goes by the size and weight of the coach. Be sure to remember that all RV’s need to be loaded with your belongings for camping BEFORE checking the air pressure in your tires. Also, most new coaches a will come with a tire pressure label inside the coach or trailer.”

'Trash Breakfast' for the RV Lifestyle.

Say what?! Some of you are thinking "you must be joking". While others are saying "yep! its the best thing since sliced bread!" Well, if you're in the first group and you have not tried this favorite foil recipe yet, you're in for a treat! Its sure to be a family favorite.

Here's what you'll need:

6 eggs

1 lb sausage or ham, cooked

1 bag shredded hash brown

2 cups shredded sharp cheese

1 medium onion
Chopped red, yellow, or green peppers

Seasoning salt and pepper

And here's what ya do:

Take an aluminum foil cooking bag sprayed with pam, sprinkle with seasoning salt and put some pats of butter in the foil bag. Open a bag of hash browns, beat eggs, chop onions, pour all ingredients into the bag of hash browns, and mix by squeezing. Then pour the mixture into the foil cooking bag and spread out. Add some salt and pepper, more seasoning salt, and a bit more butter on top of the hash brown mixture. Place the aluminum cooking bag on a preheated grill (medium heat) and turn the bag every five minutes. The bag will start to puff and you can open it to check for readiness.

And there you have it, trash breakfast prepared cooked in foil and ready to eat! Let us know how you like it and don't forget to send in those stories about your RV adventures!

Day Trips Close to Home for the RV Lifestyle

“Oh summer, are you really coming to an end so soon? I feel like we hardly got to spend any time together. There just wasn’t enough road trips for me to get my fill.” Are you one of the many feeling like this? Its true summer is nearing an end, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have time for a last minute road trip! Don’t give up on summer yet, we’ve got some great ideas for day trips close to home that will fit the RV Lifestyle!

If you’re in San Francisco you can head on over to Lava Beds National Monument. Its about 375 miles. You can explore “Captain Jack’s Stronghold” by following one of 12 hiking trails that cross the high desert at Lava Beds National Monument. As you descend a ladder into the caves, the temperature drops, the moist air fills your lungs, and a new world unfolds before you...

If you’re in Los Angeles you can take the quick 31 mile drive over to to Palos Verdes Peninsula and once there, you can visit Abalone Cove Shoreline Park. The Park features two beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tidepools, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve. Starfish and Sea Urchins are some of the animals you may find in the tide pools at low tide, so be sure to bring your camera!

Moving on up the coast to Seattle, you could take a trip to Whidbey Island, Washington -just 34 miles. As you drive over the Whidbey Scenic Isle Way you become mesmerized by the beauty. You’re so captivated by the scenic view that you don’t even realize you’ve come to almost a complete stop in the middle of the bridge and according to Jack Penland, “You’ll find that its easy to get to Whidbey Island, but difficult to leave.” That statement couldn’t be more true. Once you see all that this amazing island has to offer, you most certainly will not want to leave.

Well, our sojourn has come to an end. With driving hard, yet sleeping when needed, we arrived in Fresno late Monday night. It was quick trip home, but nevertheless enjoyable. "Oh look, that's where we ate breakfast 2 1/2 weeks ago!" Zoom. "That's where we changed the trailer tire!" Zoom. "This is where we slept on the way out!" Zoom zoom and before we knew it we were taking the Chestnut exit of Highway 99.

Even though we didn't really settle in, the Holiday Rambler Scepter was a beautiful coach that had a soft quiet ride. The floor plan was different than most, with the fridge right behind the driver and a little hallway along the side of the restroom to get to the rear bedroom. Two full-length windows were there that gave the center of the coach an airy, open feeling. Another option we appreciated was the Aqua Hot. If you're looking into purchasing a new or used motorhome, we'd sure try to get that along with the other amenities we mentioned earlier on the Monaco Executive.

Anyway, aside from having a couple of tires failing on the trailer, the trip was smooth and carefree, all 20 days. (On a side note, Thomas and others have noticed a problem with trailer tires: they age quickly, come apart, or go flat easily. This can be resolved by putting light truck tires on your trailer instead of tires designated "trailer use only". This works for 18-wheelers and it has solved all our tire problems.)

Our dog and cat were sure glad to see us; it's good to be home. It's been a pleasure logging our trip, and we hope you benefited from traveling with us. The folks at Paul Evert's RV are great people; we love working with them. See you out on the road or in the camping spot.

We're Thomas and Deborah, and because we're friends of Curt Curtis, the general manager of Paul Evert's RV Country, we are able to combine our vacation with delivering a motorhome to Wisconsin. Click on our names to gain access to our previous blogs.

On Saturday, August 13, our days on the bike finally came to an end. Over the past 12 days we put on about 1700 miles and made it all the way around Lake Michigan along with many enjoyable side trips. The best part, is that we're still in one piece. Riding street bikes is dangerous; there's no getting around it. There's nothing between you and all those potential accidents but a bit of leather. Compound that cold fact with bad weather, road construction, traffic, and we're just thanking God we're safe. Dangerous, yes, but definitely worth the risk at our age. We rolled in to Madison and were happy to see all our friends from Paul Evert's. In yet another rain storm, we moved from the bike into the motorhome.

The coach we selected, out of the few that needed to be taken back to Fresno, is a 2008 Holiday Rambler Scepter. It’s a beautifully crafted coach with many amenities similar to the Monaco Executive we drove east. This time, however, we can’t afford a leisurely pace that allows us to enjoy our time in the coach—school begins for Thomas Wednesday morning. The FMCA show in Madison ended Saturday evening. Hammer down.

It was a good show with many people now enjoying their new or pre-owned RVs, but the sales team, and Deborah and I are ready to return home. The drive is made easier knowing that every mile brings us closer to our family including the grandkids and dog and cat. We love to travel, but we also love our home. We met a couple from California last week who lived in their Holiday Rambler along with their 14 year old calico cat. She didn’t mind living on the road a bit and would periodically beg to be taken outside on her leash to be walked. Upon returning to the coach she’d find a warm spot to settle in for the next several hours. With a nice RV, life on the road can easily become life at home as well.

Adapters for adapting to the RV Lifestyle

For new RVer’s just starting out in the RV lifestyle, one accessory you’ll want to make sure you have on hand is an electrical adapter. Depending on where you camp, you never know what kind of outlet the camp ground will have.

Our Valterra brand adapts a 15A/125V to 30A/125V 15/30 . Commonly called a reverse adapter, this adapter has a female 15amp and male 30amp side. Your owners manual will tell you what kind of amp service you will need. If you have misplaced your manual, you can contact the manufacturer or our Service Department and we’ll be happy to help you.

Please keep in mind that when using this type of electrical hook up you will need to keep usage at a minimum, only using one appliance at a time.
